Huescar

History of Huescar

The heritage of Huéscar is rich and abundant. This high standard Huéscar owes to the natural communication with the areas of Levante, Murcia, Almeria and with the inland of Andalusia.

Since the Roman period, Huéscar manifests itself as a very important Centre. This shows, for example, in the antique square Osca de Plinio en Ptolomeo, and also archaelogical work at the ancient settlement of Villa de Torralba has brought a great insight into life in former times.

Also, in the remnants of the Moslem tower Homenaje de la Alcazaba we find big Roman chairs of slate with mediaevel inscriptions. The Middle Ages characterize the alternation of the Moslems and the Christians.

There are rare discoveries, among the most important the Moslem Mezquita. Mezquita represents the period of the Atalaya, which originates at the most strategic point and milestone of the Middle Ages of our history.

Huéscar, which belonged to Don Luis de Beaumont, Count of Lerin, was taken over by the Duke of Alba II, in 1513. This Duke brought many important changes into Huéscar.
The most important is the replacement of the Moslem culture by Roman Catholic culture.

During this period a new infrastructure was created, along with beautiful churches, monasteries, and palaces for the nobility.

Places of interest
Some of the places of interest of the city Huéscar are the churches of Santa Maria, Santiago de Finales S.XV, Dominicas and the monasteries Santo Domingo of 1547 and San Fransisco, and last but not least the Tower of Homenaje.

Don't forget to visit the aquaduct Carlos III from the 18th century. The building was a very ambitious plan.A totaly different element is the beautiful modern house Santo Cristo, with its remarkable architecture, especially for Huéscar. Most recommendable is a walk through the city centre, which is full of history and monuments.

Crafts

The traditional handicrafts were at one time in danger of being lost, but fortunately nowadays these traditional crafts are once again being picked up by the younger generation, with the encouragement of the Academy of Art in Huéscar.

They mainly practise the art of ceramics, woodcutting, painting and forging. A lot of these arts and crafts you find in the local galleries.

Gastronomy

The excellent kitchen of Huéscar serves many typical dishes, for example 'Codero Segureno' (lamb meat), prepared in many differrent ways. They use a lot of garlic and olive oil, which is very good for your health. The traditional desserts they serve include a delicious liquor 'Licor de Gloria' from the area 'Mistela'.
